The Afghan Sports Federation (ASF) 17th annual cultural and sporting event "Afghan Cup 2014" came to conclusion on Sunday, August 3rd at Howison Sportsplex Woodbridge, Virginia.
Afghanistan In Asian Games 2014
The 17th Asian Games will take place over 16 days in Incheon, Korea, from September 19 to October 4, 2014. It will be the third time Korea has hosted the OCA’s showpiece event, following Seoul in 1986 and Pusan in 2002. There will be approximately 20,000 participants, comprised of 13,000 athletes and team officials from the 45 NOCs, and 7,000 media. The slogan is “Diversity Shines Here”. Athletes will compete in 36 sports, including the 28 Olympic Games sports on the program for Rio de Janeiro 2016. Afghanistan is featuring in following sports; Football, Cricket, Taekwondo and Wrestling. The Organizers will use 49 competition venues, including 23 new stadiums, and 54 training venues, 49 of which already exist. The ground-breaking ceremony for the 60,000-capacity main stadium took place on June 28, 2011, and work is expected to be completed by April 2014.

ASF Select Crowned AASA Soccer Champions
ASF Select were crowned the Champions of the Afghan American Sports Association’s Memorial Day Soccer Tournament by defeating Brishna of New York in the finals on Monday, May 25th at Teaneck, NJ. The tournament was comprised of 7 teams with players from all over the world. The teams consisted of ASF Select(VA) Brishna(NY) Pamir (NJ), Itehad (NY), Itefaq (NJ), ASF A (VA), and Pamir B (NJ).
ASF Select in Persian Cup
ASF select in Persian Cup Soccer tournament, May 4th. The team had yet another strong performance all around, but suffered their first lost of the tournament in the finals against a very strong PDL/USL team, Virginia Royals. The team is preparing for the the next Soccer tournament hosted by Afghan American Sports Association in New Jersey on the Memorial Day weekend and looking to have another impressive run.
ASF Select Impresses In Dubai
The ASF Select team had an impressive showing in Dubai at the Afghan Football Club World Championship. The team tenaciously and artistically maneuvered its way to the semi-finals of the tournament. ASF Select eventually fell to champions Holland FC in penalty kicks after drawing 2-2 at full time. ASF Select finished the group stage in a 3-way tie with Premier (CA) and Holland FC. The team defeated champions Holland FC, 5-3, in the group stage in what many consider to be the "game of the tournament." This was ASF Select's second major tournament after winning its debut tournament, the afsnewO Cup in California. The team captain and leading goal scorer for the tournament was All American Wais Ansary. The technical crew behind the success of the team consisted of Managers Esmat Abbasi & Jamil Faryadi with Coaches Faiz Behgoman, Azi Wasiq, and Head Coach Zia Panjshiri. ASF’s Executive VP, Atiq Panjshiri, was also present to support and cheer the team a long way from home. ASF Select is currently playing in the 1st Division of the NVSL Men's League in Washington, DC and is planning to attend several regional Afghan and non-Afghan tournaments in the future. ASF Select looks forward to hosting all of the talented Afghan squads from around the world at the 17th Annual Afghan Cup this July 31 to August 3 in Washington, DC. ASF Select will be ready.
