ASF Select Crowned AASA Soccer Champions
ASF Select were crowned the Champions of the Afghan American Sports Association’s Memorial Day Soccer Tournament by defeating Brishna of New York in the finals on Monday, May 25th at Teaneck, NJ. The tournament was comprised of 7 teams with players from all over the world. The teams consisted of ASF Select(VA) Brishna(NY) Pamir (NJ), Itehad (NY), Itefaq (NJ), ASF A (VA), and Pamir B (NJ). ASF Select topped the group by nine points to face the fourth place team, Pamir of New Jersey, in the Semi-finals. The semi-final match was a showcase of talent, brilliant passing, and plenty of goals to finish the game 6-0 in order to book their spot in the Championship match. The second semi-final was between Itefaq of New Jersey and Brishna of New York which resulted in 1-0 win for Brishna.
The Championship game was played at 6 PM in front of thousands of fans from New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and all across America. ASF Select dominated the game and put relentless pressure on Brishna, but was very unlucky in finishing their chances. The game was still 0-0 after regulation and overtime, and had to be decided by the way of penalty kicks. ASF Select’s goal keeper, Tom Stack had an exceptional performance and stopped two penalty kicks and forced another one wide resulting in a 3–2 win in PKs for ASF select.
